What N.M.L.S. Verification Means for You as a Borrower

When lenders compete for your loan on HomeTurf, you should know who you are dealing with. That is why every lender is verified against the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System, usually shortened to N.M.L.S., before they are allowed to bid. Here is what that means in plain terms.

What the N.M.L.S. is

The Nationwide Multistate Licensing System is the official registry used across the United States to license and track mortgage companies and loan officers. Each licensed entity has an N.M.L.S. identification number, and their licensing status is recorded there. It is the standard reference the industry uses to confirm that a mortgage professional is who they say they are and is licensed to operate.

How HomeTurf uses it

Before a lender can submit a single offer on the platform, we check their N.M.L.S. number and confirm their licensing status. Only verified lenders are allowed to compete. That means the offers you receive come from mortgage professionals who are registered in the system, not from anonymous or unverified sources.

Why this matters to you

Verification gives you a few concrete protections:

Verification is one part of a larger set of ground rules. Lenders cannot pay for placement, so no one can buy their way to the top of your list. You stay anonymous until you choose a winner, so your contact details are not shared until you decide. And you always pick the winning offer yourself.

What verification does not do

It is worth being clear about the limits. Verification confirms that a lender is licensed and registered. It does not mean HomeTurf endorses any specific lender or guarantees any particular outcome, and it is not a substitute for reading the terms of an offer carefully. HomeTurf is a technology marketplace, not a lender. You should still compare each offer on its own merits, which we cover in a separate guide on comparing offers beyond the rate.

The short version

If you see a lender competing for your loan on HomeTurf, they have been checked against the N.M.L.S. first. That is a baseline of trust built into the platform so you can focus on comparing offers.
